Chasing Street Art in Wynwood

Hen party in Miami. Lucky us, we were victims of a historical chill weather in south Florida, ideal for spending the afternoon chasing murals in Wynwood quarter.

The now famous Wynwood used to be an industrial quarter, nothing really very special. But in 2009, visionary Tony Goldman began the Wynwood Walls project to re-invent the Neighborhood with Street Art and Entrepreneurial Innovation. He documented the change and the result was the series ‘Here Comes The Neighborhood’ .

The Project has brought the world’s greatest street artists to Miami. Just to name some of my favourites: Os Gemeos, Case, Bordalo II, Seth Globepainter, Ron English, Tristan Eaton, Vhils, Pixel Pancho. They made possible this remarkable transformation: from a dormant industrial quarter into the global Mecca of Street Art.

Because of its popularity, the Wynwood Walls have migrated to include murals outside the park in the surrounding neighbourhood. I was able to find among these epic ‘Outside the Walls’, some great murals by ROA, Cranio, & The London Police for example. But the artists did not limit their creativity to only murals, they also invaded the floors and roofs of the neighbourhood with graffiti & art, converting this area into Paradise.

One day is not enough to explore the entire area, it’s a labyrinth of murals and I couldn’t spot all the pieces I wanted to see. There is much much more and it evolves from year to year, the perfect excuse to go back.
